2016 Moon Viewing
In September of 2016, we were invited to perform at the annual “Moon Viewing” event for the Asian Art Society at the Birmingham Museum of Art. As a reception style social event with entertainment, arts & crafts for kids and Asian food, BSV Director, LaDonna Smith, created a musical backdrop with improvisational solos on the Japanese shamisen and shakuhachi with light percussion accompaniment.
After an introductory welcome by BMA Curator of Asian Art, Don Wood, Birmingham Suzuki Violinists presented the featured showcase of Asian music. First, our Chinese-American students performed a beautiful collection of Chinese folk songs in parts. Then the larger group of BSVA students presented a beautiful set of delicate Japanese children’s songs.
Thanks to both the Asian Art Society and the Birmingham Museum of Art for inviting us to participate in the beautiful event at the Museum’s outdoor sculpture garden. The Moon was full of magic!
